Now Toyota has announced it too will enter an electric car into the iconic race as part of a joint project with Japanese company RK1, Inc. The 2013 Honda Fit EV has earned the highest EPA efficiency rating granted to any vehicle offered in the U.S.: 118 miles-per-gallon-equivalent. That's higher than the 2012 Mitsubishi i minicar, the previous record-holder at 112 MPGe, and considerably higher than the Nissan Leaf and Ford Focus Electric, at 99 MPGe and 105 MPGe respectively. MPGe is an efficiency measure based on how far the car can travel on the amount of electricity with energy equivalent to that in a single gallon of gasoline. The EPA has also rated the Honda Fit EV at 82 miles of driving range. That's more than the Focus...

How To Make Money On Electric Cars: Sell Green Credits (To Other Carmakers)
Most brand-new auto technologies are, at best, a breakeven proposition in their early years. Toyota is thought to have lost money on every Prius hybrid it sold for several years, until its sales rose enough to gain economies of scale. Makers of plug-in electric cars may be losing money on each one...

Do Tougher Gas-Mileage Rules Hurt Electric-Car Sales? We Think Not
At the moment, plug-in electric car sales are chugging along between 3,000 and 4,000 a month. So with the upcoming 2012 Tesla Model S added to the mix, it seems likely that 30,000 to 50,000 electrics will be sold in the U.S. this year--more than double last year's sales. Electric motorcycles have already proven they’re great for inner-city commutes, dirt-track fun and even drag strip racing, but now Oregon-based Brammo Motorcycles adds something very important to that list: taking a pillion passenger. In the highly-polished ad for its new 2012 Brammo Empulse R, a trendy, young motorcyclist is seen picking up his date on his sexy new ride, taking her out on the town. That’s a pretty common theme played out worldwide by millions of motorcyclists, but aside from various electric maxi-scooters, the 2012 Brammo Empulse R is the first production...

It's been just over a week since I picked up my all-electric Renault Fluence ZE--one of 110 Better Place customers to do so during May, according to the company. I've now put on 430 all-electric miles in nine days of driving. I've charged the car predominantly at home, with a couple of extra top-ups at a local shopping mall and one battery switch. (I can only charge the car from Better Place charging points.) So far, Better Place has only four switch stations open, though these put much of Israel within range. They are not available all the time yet, so early customers like me are advised to...
