Later this morning, Fiat will unveil no fewer than four new models of its 500 minicar. Among them will be the 500e, a limited production electric conversion of the hatchback that it really doesn't want to build--as company officials have said repeatedly. The 2013 Fiat 500e is a compliance car meant solely to satisfy California's zero-emission vehicle requirement. It will be sold only in California, at least initially--not even in Italy, the spiritual home of the 500, or anywhere else in Europe. An 83-kilowatt (111-horsepower) electric motor drives the front wheels through a single-speed...

For many months, Nissan has said it would sell 20,000 Leaf electric cars in the U.S. by next March. Sales rates didn't seem to support that, and now Nissan has conceded that it won't happen. CEO Carlos Ghosn said that number "would not be reached," in an interview on Bloomberg TV in Mexico City yesterday. The Detroit News reported Ghosn's remarks. Nissan sold 9,674 Leafs in the U.S. during 2011, and had long planned to double that number this year. But from January through October, it sold 6,791 Leafs--15 percent fewer than in the same period last year--although October sales spiked to 1,579...

One week ago today, Americans elected a president. During the hard-fought campaign that preceded the election, Republican candidate Mitt Romney called Tesla a "loser" company, along with Fisker Automotive. Tesla Motors [NSDQ:TSLA] and other companies named by Romney had received loans or grants from the U.S. government. Last night, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made his first comment on the affair, at a ceremony in which the 2012 Tesla Model S received Motor Trend's Car of the Year award. Musk contrasted the Model S, the winner of the award, to the "loser" remark made during the campaign--by parsing...

Chevrolet Springo Electric Car: Coming Soon (To China Only)

This seems to be our time for debunking dumb stories about plug-in electric cars. First, we had to educate a Forbes columnist (and oil-industry consultant) about how the auto industry works. Now, it's time to offer some gentle guidance to all those journalists who covered last month's release of a...

Fisker Automotive has had more than its share of trials and tribulations of late. Now, a new threat has emerged that holds the potential to harm the company severely, by cutting off its supply of lithium-ion battery packs. A123 Systems, its bankrupt battery supplier, wants to end the contract under which it supplies the Fisker's battery. As reported a few days ago in the Dow Jones Daily Bankruptcy Review, Fisker objected in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to A123's bid to scrap the supply contract. "In so doing, [A123] will saddle [its] estates and creditors with a claim of as much as, if not more...
