  • 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV

The 2014 Chevrolet Spark EV has been a long time coming, but it's almost here. This morning, Chevy announced that its only battery-electric car will have a range of 82 miles and be rated at a combined 119 MPGe efficiency. MPGe, or miles-per-gallon-equivalent, is a measure of the distance a car can travel electrically on the same amount of battery energy as contained in 1 gallon of gasoline. The Spark EV's 82-mile range matches that of the 2013 Honda Fit EV, but isn't as high as that of the 2013 Fiat 500e (87 miles) or the 2013 Toyota RAV4 EV (103 miles). But its 119 MPGe is the highest...

Natural Gas As Vehicle Fuel: Why Trucks Make More Sense Than Cars

Natural gas passenger cars have never really taken off in the U.S. like some thought they might. While the fuel is hugely popular in countries like Brazil, gasoline has always reigned supreme in North America. Or diesel, if you're a long-haul trucker--though that could be about to change. Natural...

Fisker Misses DoE Loan Payment; House Hearing Tomorrow

The fortunes of the two highest-profile electric-car startups couldn't be diverging more starkly today. Fast Food & Fast Charging For Electric Cars: The Perfect Combination Meal?

  • 2013 Chevrolet Volt in Santa Monica, California [photo: Chris Williams]

One or two locations appear time and time again when it comes to electric or hybrid vehicle sales. If you didn't think California was up there, then you've not been paying much attention. Oregon too--in Portland, the Nissan Leaf actually outsold other Nissan models last month. And of course Lima, Ohio. What was that last one again? Ah yes, Lima, Ohio--according to Cars.com's search traffic data (via our sister site, TheCarConnection), people in Lima were actually eighth on the top ten list of those searching for green vehicles. It's a noteworthy blip on an otherwise pretty standard list of...

Best-Selling Nissan In Portland: Leaf Electric Car--Due To Electric Highway?

We've already asked whether the Tesla Model S sells more units than the equivalent BMW, Audi or Mercedes--and now Nissan is outselling regular vehicles with its Leaf. Not Corollas or Ford Focus countrywide, of course--but apparently every other Nissan vehicle in March, in Portland, Oregon. With...

U.S.-Built Electric Cars To Get U.S.-Made Battery Cells Too

While the number of plug-in electric cars built in the U.S. is steadily increasing, the lithium-ion cells in their batteries have mostly come from overseas. • Sergio Marchionne

Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne isn't known for his love of electric vehicles. We really rate the company's first offering, the 2014 Fiat 500e electric car, but Sergio himself doesn't--speaking at the Society of Automotive Engineers 2013 World Congress, he reiterated that the company is losing $10,000 on every example it sells. According to The Detroit News, Marchionne wants automakers to have more freedom over which green technology to move forward with--and his own preference is for natural gas. He believes natural gas is the "cleanest alternative available" to oil-based fuels, and that...

From the ashes of an old gas station flies the phoenix of electric charging for all. If you excuse the confused metaphor, that's essentially the idea behind an electric car charging plaza proposal in Encinitas, California. San Diego-based Evoasis wants to build the new plaza on the corner of Vulcan...

Electric Cars Are Fast: First-Ever U.S. Speeding Ticket

Speeding is big business. There's no money to be made from it as an individual of course, unless you subscribe to the theory "time is money". But the U.S. Census Bureau estimates 100,000 Americans are ticketed for speeding every day, at an average cost of $150 per ticket--$5.5 billion a year in...

  • Bob Lutz

You most likely know by now that fuel efficiency is slated to double in new vehicles by 2025. What you may not know is how much that will cost you when you buy a new car in future years. Thousands of real dollars The EPA has long estimated that a new vehicle will cost about $3,000 more in real (inflation-adjusted) dollars in 2025 than the same vehicle would in 2012. In his keynote speech, quoted in The Detroit News, Lutz...
