Democracy can be a messy and ugly thing to watch in practice. Especially when it's being pointed toward carmakers, which aren't often the subject of mass protests pointed toward their future product lines. This morning, we received an e-mail with a link to a Causes page urging Mitsubishi not to "desecrate" its Lancer Evolution model (universally called the Evo) by greening it. "The carmaker might not kill the Evo, but it could turn it into a greener development," warns the site. "We don't want a hybrid Evo or larger vehicle with another name that uses a similar 4WD system - the current recipe...

With Green Cars, A License To Drive More?
Sweden has, for several years, led the world in per-capita green-car ownership. And it's managed to strengthen economically without increasing industrial carbon emissions. But it's emitting more from its tailpipes. Swedes are driving more—enough to wipe away any the gains from greener...

Who's Your Gas Buddy? 16 Cars With 40-MPG Gas Mileage On Sale Now
Gas prices got you all nervous? Figuring the days of cheap gas are over? Thinking about a new car with much better gas mileage? Well, just because the EPA rates a specific car at the magic 40-mpg mark doesn't mean you'll actually get 40 mpg. But the ratings are a good indicator of where cars stand...

Two weeks ago, the EPA rated the 2012 Infiniti M35h Hybrid at 27 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, for a combined rating of 29 mpg. That makes it the only car in its class, as Infiniti proudly trumpeted, with both 350 horsepower and a highway rating of 30 mpg or more. Now, the cost of that fuel efficiency has been announced as well. The manufacturer's suggested retail price of the 2012 M Hybrid will be $53,700. (That does not include a mandatory destination fee of $875.) How does that compare to the rest of the 2012 Infiniti M range, which goes on sale on March 2? It's more expensive than the pair of...

Do Battery-Pack Failures Reduce the Life of Hybrid Cars? A Reader Asks
Our reader Jonathan P asks: I have a 1997 Saturn that, remarkably, is still running. It probably has the book value of a large watermelon, so if anything major goes wrong with it, that's the end of that. If that Saturn were a hybrid, I'm guessing the battery pack would have died about four years...

2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Engine Stalling Investigated

Slowly, ever so slowly, the image of green cars is expanding beyond tiny tin-box hatchbacks and nerdy Toyota Prius hybrids to encompass a broader spectrum of the car scene. Take, for instance, this 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid show car, customized by Jonathan Garcia of M&J Enterprises in Phillips Ranch, California. Garcia saw "a need to help shift the public's perception that alternative-powered vehicles are boring." He picked the 2010 Fusion Hybrid for its larger size, more traditional styling, and potential to attract mainstream buyers. He also wanted to show hybrid owners that customizing...

Think "hybrid" and what comes to mind? Small or midsize, sometimes odd-driving Toyotas? There's now actually a raft of low-volume hybrid luxury and sports sedans from such makers as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Lexus, and now Infiniti. The 2012 Infiniti M35h Hybrid was officially unveiled at last fall's 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show after one of the more drawn-out introductions we've seen. Now the EPA has rated its gas mileage, and Infiniti is proud of the fact that it is the sole vehicle in its class to offer both more than 350 horsepower and a highway rating of more than 30 miles per gallon. Note...
