Racing and fuel efficiency have often been considered at odds with each other, but green racing does exist, somewhat below the radar. One of the more accessible competitions is the Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup series, now starting its third season. Like the old SCCA Showroom Stock categories, the TDI Cup competitors are recognizably production models with some racing equipment added on. Now, armchair racers can drive TDI Cup race cars too--or at least facsimiles thereof. The 2010 Volkswagen Jetta TDI Cup Street Edition is based on a standard Jetta TDI, plus the race version's entire body kit...

New Green Compact Car Coming In 2011 From ... Mercury ?!?!?
Despite the appealing 2010 Milan Hybrid, the Mercury brand hardly springs to mind when you think "green car". In fact, it hardly springs to mind, period; Ford's upmarket brand has languished for years with little product and even less attention. Now that's going to change. Ford confirmed yesterday...

Vancouver Olympics Get Green Transport: Electric Streetcars
We'd be remiss if we didn't nod to the Vancouver Olympics, opening today, and highlight their heavy reliance on mass transit to move spectators and athletes around the scenic seaside region. In particular, we note that electric vehicles play a major role. Take, for instance, the city's streetcar...

Well, here's some good news: We have less than a year to wait before the neat little Fiat 500 hatchback goes on sale at selected Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealers. When it arrives, it'll be Chrysler's greenest car by a pretty big margin. EPA fuel efficiency ratings haven't yet been issued for the little 500, but we'd expect it to be at least on a par with the 2010 Mini Cooper, whose standard version comes in at 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway. We've known for a while that the 2011 Fiat 500 was coming Stateside, of course, but it's nice to have the timing confirmed. The news came from Ralph Gilles...

Could Passing Cars Power Wind-Turbine Highway Lights?
And now, for today's great green concept, we present: Overhead highway lights powered by wind turbines, which are spun by the air turbulence generated as cars and trucks whiz past at speed. Like many such concepts, this one's conceptually brilliant: Use all that wasted wind to do useful work, in...

2010 Chicago Auto Show: Kia Ray Plug-In Hybrid Concept
The Chicago Auto Show is traditionally all about trucks, and in this slow year it's pretty light on green cars. A welcome exception comes from Korean maker Kia, who just unveiled their Ray plug-in hybrid concept car. The Ray points the way toward a stylish compact four-door sedan that's both...

Toyota Prius Recall Guide: Sudden Acceleration & Brake Safety
Everything you need to know about the recalls affecting the 2010 Toyota Prius, and the 2004-2009 Prius too
John Voelcker -
As expected, Toyota has announced a recall for its 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Lexus HS 250h models to update the anti-lock braking system (ABS) software. The new software improves the response time of the anti-lock system and alters its sensitivity to tire slippage. The update is intended to reduce inconsistencies in brake feel that many owners experienced as brake failure. The recall is voluntary, meaning that owners need not have their cars updated if they are satisfied with the brake feel. Interaction of ABS, regen & hydraulic brakes In the 2010 Toyota Prius, the problem occurs when...

More Than 30 MPG Highway: The New Benchmark For Green Cars?
So what exactly IS a "green car"? At both the Los Angeles Auto Show and Detroit Auto Show, you could find the word "green" all over the place. LA has been pitching itself for years as the greenest auto show, with fewer muscle cars and more hybrids, clean diesels, and so forth than any other U.S...

Why The 2010 Toyota Prius Doesn't Have A Lithium-Ion Battery
Many reviewers lauded the new, third generation 2010 Toyota Prius hybrid when it launched last spring--but wondered why it didn't use a lithium-ion battery, rather than 15-year-old nickel-metal-hydride technology. Now we learn that the 2010 Prius was indeed supposed to have a new, more energy-dense...

Honda and Scion Struggle Seeking Small-Hybrid Sweet Spot
Before either car launched, the 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Honda Insight were viewed as natural rivals. Would the third generation of Toyota's definitive hybrid be threatened by Honda's "least expensive hybrid", which too offered five doors and good gas mileage? What a difference a year makes...

The striking BMW Vision EfficientDynamics hybrid concept was unquestionably the star concept of September's Frankfurt Motor Show. It proved, once again, that when German carmakers turn their minds toward a new goal--in this case, a sports car with breathtaking fuel efficiency--they can produce audaciously good concepts that often end up as production cars. M1 for the new century? And now it looks like the EfficientDynamics hybrid sports coupe too will be offered for sale, starting in 2013, at a projected volume of 5,000 to 10,000 copies a year. Reports say BMW is viewing the car in the vein...
