Life With Tesla Model S: Tires Cost Me More Than My 'Fuel' Does
I always knew electric cars were cheap to run, but this is ridiculous. After I bought the first set of replacement tires for my 2013 Tesla Model S (at 26,000 miles), I crunched the numbers and came to a startling conclusion: I've spent substantially less per mile for my electric "fuel" than I have...

Two years ago, we pointed out that several electric cars now on sale were purely "compliance cars," built in minimal numbers purely to comply with California rules that require sales of zero-emission vehicles. But almost four years after the first Nissan Leaf went on sale in December 2010, it's become pretty clear which carmakers are serious about plug-in electric cars--and which aren't. DON'T MISS: Electric Cars: Some Are Real, Most Are Only 'Compliance Cars'--We Name Names (May 2012) We looked at U.S. sales of all cars with a plug--whether battery-electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles--for...

It's time once more for our annual Best Car To Buy award. It's the fifth time we've chosen the one car or lineup, newly introduced for this model year, that represents the best new green car to enter the market. To qualify, a car must be all-new or substantially updated from the previous model year. (That's why, Tesla fans, we're not going to say it's the Model S again. The electric luxury sedan won in 2013.) To be eligible for consideration, a car must be available for purchase in North America by April 2015. At least one High Gear Media editor--and ideally several of us--must have driven...

It appears that the 2015 Ford Focus Electric will get a major price cut of $6,000, bringing the suggested retail price to $29,995--more in line with the best-selling Nissan Leaf. The battery-electric Focus is now in its fourth model year, and only about 4,000 have been sold since it first went on sale in December 2011. That's roughly one-fifteenth the number of Nissan Leaf electric cars that have been sold (over a period one year longer). Both the Focus Electric and the Leaf are five-door hatchbacks the size of conventional compact cars, with rated ranges between 80 and 85 miles. The report...
