Stellantis is recalling nearly 45,000 plug-in hybrid crossover SUVs globally because they may have been built with frail brake pedals.
The recall encompasses 2024-2025 Alfa Romeo Tonale and 2024 Dodge Hornet plug-in hybrids. Of the total number of recalled vehicles, 21,069 are in the U.S., 2,299 in Canada, 145 in Mexico, and 20,987 in markets outside North America according to Stellantis.

The affected vehicles may have brake pedals that collapse when pressed, rendering it unusable. Should this occur, drivers can pull the electronic parking brake tab on the center console to help slow the vehicles, Stellantis notes, adding that automatic emergency braking will also intervene if a collision is likely to occur. Drivers have to make sure that feature is turned on, though.
Stellantis estimates that 5% of the recalled vehicles have faulty brake pedals. The automaker is aware of 15 cases of collapsed brake pedals globally, including one crash, but no injuries or fatalities.

Dealers will reinforce the brake pedals in affected vehicles free of charge. Stellantis expects to mail owner notification letters Oct. 24. The closely-related Tonale and Hornet plug-in hybrids were also recalled last year over a fire concern related to loose battery cables. The Tonale is sold exclusively as a plug-in hybrid in the U.S., while the Hornet is also sold with a conventional non-hybrid powertrain. Both extract 33 miles of EPA-rated electric range and 29 mpg combined fuel economy, while aiming for a sporty character and foreshadowing upcoming all-electric models from both brands.
