The iconic Toyota 2-seat sports coupe known as the MR-2 is set to make a comeback. The new incarnation will actually be Toyota's first foray into the hybrid sports coupe realm.
This new niche has already one member planned, the Honda CR-Z hybrid.
Toyota vice president Masatami Takimoto said that the car will have to be set up differently than the Prius and alluded to pricing. He said “We have set a tough price point (expected to be around £20,000), as it will be easier to sell if it is affordable. It has to be fun to drive, too, which means the hybrid set-up must be different to the Prius’s, with greater responsiveness.”
It was noted that the car could do 0 to 60 in under 7 seconds and could get up to 60 MPG. This vehicle was first demonstrated as a concept by Toyota in the form of the FT-HS Concept. That concept car used a 3.5L V6 engine. The new MR-2 will be the production version.
